What the 🪦 emoji means
A grave marker with the letters RIP. Added in Emoji 13.0 and used two ways that could not be further apart: real mourning, and the joke that something has died.
The second is far more common — a discontinued product, a plan that collapsed, a group chat nobody writes in any more. Before sending it about a person, be sure the tone matches: 🕯️ and 🫂 carry grief without the joke attached.
