Why an emoji shows up as a square — and when it stops

The character exists in the standard, but your phone cannot draw it. Where the gap comes from, how long it lasts by release dates, and what to do about it.

Someone sends you a message and where the picture should be there is an empty rectangle, or a box with digits inside. Nothing is broken and nothing got lost on the way: the character arrived intact, and your device even knows which one it is. It simply cannot draw it.

What “tofu” means

That rectangle has a nickname — tofu, after the block of bean curd it resembles. It is the font saying: the character is in the text, but I have no drawing for it, so here is a placeholder.

The key point: an emoji is not an image travelling with your message. It is a text character, exactly like the letter “W”. What travels is its number in the standard; drawing it is the receiving device’s job.

That explains the oddities: the same character is flat and yellow for you, glossy for your friend, and a plain box for someone else. The sender has nothing to do with it. You can see how one character differs between sets on any catalogue page — for instance rolling on the floor laughing.

Three states of one character

Before an emoji reaches your screen it passes three independent stages. They are easy to confuse, and the difference matters:

  1. Approved in the standard. The Unicode Consortium has given the character a number and a name. From that moment it exists on paper — and is drawn nowhere.
  2. Drawn by a vendor. Apple, Google, Samsung or Microsoft has made a picture for it in house style and put it in the font.
  3. Installed on a device. The update carrying that font has reached the actual phone or computer.

Users only ever see the third stage. A headline saying “Unicode approves new emoji” describes the first — your screen is still six months away.

Where the gap comes from

The sequence repeats every year:

  • September. The consortium approves a version and publishes the characters with their numbers.
  • Autumn and winter. Vendors draw them in house style — glossy at Apple, flat at Google, outlined at Samsung.
  • Spring. The drawings ship inside a system update, usually a minor one rather than a headline release.
  • After that. Until the update is installed, the character stays a box for you.

The last point is the underrated one. Even a shipped update has to reach the actual device — and older phones stop getting new versions altogether. That is not “later”, that is “never”: the emoji set on such a handset is frozen for good.

How long it really takes

We collected the release dates of four platforms and measured the gap. Here is how the recent versions spread out:

A full year is not an exaggeration. Emoji 16.0 came out in September 2024 and only reached Windows in August 2025. For all that time a Windows user saw empty boxes where the person next to them, on Android, saw pictures. The full release table for all four platforms is on our fonts and image sets page.

A useful corollary: a box on your screen does not mean a box on your friend’s. And the shiny new character they sent you may well have looked perfectly fine on their end.

How many characters are actually at risk

“New emoji may not display” is too vague to act on. We counted, across our own catalogue, what share of characters falls into the risk zone today.

Read that as: nine characters out of ten are safe almost everywhere. The problem concerns a narrow top slice of the catalogue — and that slice is exactly what ends up in “new emoji” round-ups, because novelty is their only shared property.

The distribution inside versions is worth a look too. Emoji 17.0 brought 163 characters — unusually many for one release; Emoji 16.0 brought eight. So the “fresh” part of the catalogue is almost entirely one year’s work, and a device without the spring update loses a visible chunk at once.

A practical rule: if a character is in the hundred most popular, it is old and safe by definition — popularity takes years to build.

Why Google is always first and Microsoft last

This is not about diligence but about how the work is organised. Google’s font — Noto Color Emoji — is the reference set, drawn alongside the standard itself. Since 2022 Google has published it separately from Android, so a new version appears within days of approval.

Apple and Samsung are tied to their system updates: Apple almost always ships emoji in a spring iOS release, Samsung with the next One UI. Microsoft updates the Segoe UI Emoji font together with Windows, and major Windows updates come around less often.

Every character exists in three states at once: approved in the standard, drawn by a vendor, installed on a device. Users only ever see the third.

Which characters are risky right now

The newest versions are the riskiest. Emoji 17.0, published in September 2025, had reached Google, Samsung and Apple by August 2026 — but not Microsoft. On a Windows work machine those characters are still boxes.

Further out sit the Emoji 18.0 candidates: nineteen entries, approval due in September 2026. Nobody has drawn them yet, and spring 2027 is the realistic date.

A separate trap is composite characters. Flags, families and professions are often assembled from several characters glued by an invisible joiner. A system that does not know the glue shows not a box but the parts on their own: two letters instead of a flag, three separate people instead of a family. It does not look like an error, which makes it more misleading than an empty box.

What to do right now

  1. Update the system. This is the only real fix. Emoji arrive with the font, and the font arrives with the update.
  2. Check the app. Some messengers ship their own image sets and update them independently, so a character may appear there first.
  3. Look at how the character is drawn elsewhere. Every character page here shows it in several open sets at once, which works no matter what is installed on your device.
  4. Do not substitute a lookalike. Reaching for an older character is tempting, but it means something else, and that is what your reader will see.
  5. Writing for everyone? Go old. For a newsletter, a sign or a profile bio, a character from five years ago is safer: it exists everywhere, including office computers and television sets.

What not to do: install a third-party “emoji pack” from an unknown source. The system font is a trusted component, and replacing it with a file off the internet trades security for cosmetics.

How to check what your reader will see

There is no reliable way to look through someone else’s eyes, but there is a close-enough approximation:

  • Check the year of the version that introduced the character. Under two years old means some readers will see a box.
  • Cross-check the release table to see whether that version reached the platform you care about.
  • For anything important, pick characters older than 2020 — no living system argues with those.

The short answer

A box means the character is newer than your font. Updating the system fixes it, and the wait after a standard is published typically runs from six months to a year — depending on whose device you are holding. Nothing is broken: you simply looked into the future before it reached your screen.
